Identity and credit card theft is a growing problem occurring across all industries, especially the restaurant industry. Until now the credit card issuers (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, and Discover) have born the full brunt of all costs associated with this problem. In order to take the responsibility out of their hands they have put in place the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS) that all merchants who accept credit cards must comply with. The surprising part is that if you have signed a merchant agreement with a credit card processor then you have ALREADY AGREED to follow these standards.
The PCI-DSS spans across a total of 12 very technical points. Each of these 12 points has a number of equally technical subpoints. The more of these points that you have covered the less of a chance you have of getting breached and you may also reduce the amount of information that could be stolen. - Bronze Plan - This plan is only a stepping stone to get you on the way to being PCI compliant. With this package you will get secure remote access to your site. This means that you will be able to get into your business computer securely from anywhere in the world. Along with the PCI approved remote access you will get a $50,000 insurance policy to help with the costs associated with an electronic breach.
- Silver Plan - This plan builds off of the bronze but also includes a firewall device which will be installed on your network. This firewall device acts as a traffic cop between your restaurant and the internet. It is also monitored 24 hours a day. If someone tries to get into your system the firewall will send up a red flag and will let you know that something fishy is going on. This will help you to mitigate how long a breach may occur.
- Gold Plan - This option will get you fully compliant with the PCI-DSS. It builds off of the silver plan by adding the final components required by the DSS. With this package you will have quarterly tests done on your site to make sure that it is fully compliant. This means that once a quarter someone will try and break into your system to see what the results are and to see if there are any weakspots in the network. You will also get a PCI approved antivirus software as well as help with your PCI compliance worksheet that you should have filled out once a year to prove that you are compliant.

Of course each of these plans has a different price point depending on the amount of compliance with the gold plan being the best chance of mitigating your risks.
